Endurance International’s Bluehost Uses OSCON Sponsorship to Give Back

Endurance International’s Bluehost Uses OSCON Sponsorship to Give BackPROVO, UT, July 22, 2013 – Bluehost, a member of the Endurance International Group and a leading provider of cloud-based solutions, is using its sponsorship of the 2013 O’Reilly Open Source Convention to “give back” to the Open Source community.

Bluehost has given booth space to such Open Source favorites as WordPress, phpBB, Drupal, PrestaShop and is providing a very special showcase for Code for America, the nonprofit organization working to help local governments keep pace with their citizens and better operate through new open source tools and technologies.

Dan Handy, CEO of Bluehost, said he feels that this is the perfect conference to demonstrate that Bluehost really walks the walk.

“Turning our booth space over to the developers seemed like the right move,” said Dan.

Hari Ravichandran, Founder and CEO of Endurance, supports Handy, saying, “Earlier this year Endurance committed $250,000 to Code for America, and we’re now encouraging the open source community to help them do more — by matching that pledge.”

“Let’s see if we can scale the good work they are doing for municipalities that need help,” he said.

Since 2009, Code for America has used open source code to improve the efficiency and transparency of local governments through three main initiatives: connecting governments with developers and designers; providing funding, office space and mentorship to civic startups; and organizing local community groups to build civic software.

“We believe OSCON is the ideal place to challenge like-minded coders to become involved in this initiative that has the potential to transform the way citizens connect with their municipality. It is as easy as committing a few dollars or a few hours of your own time,” said Ravichandran.

“The resources these governments can save with more efficient technology can be re-directed back into more services and support for their citizens,” he said.

Bluehost’s Director of Open Source Outreach, Jared Smith will be delivering a keynote speech alongside Code for America’s new Chief Technology Officer, Michal Migurski. Smith said OSCON attracts talented open-source developers, and believes there’s a lot they can—and will want to—contribute to Code for America.

“I’m looking forward to delivering the keynote on Thursday morning at OSCON where we will talk about examples of Code for America delivering innovative ways to make government more efficient. From making public information more accessible to making public artwork easier to find, I encourage everyone in the open source community to do what they can to help.”
